Why my parks matter.

Moore Square

Raleigh, NC, is experiencing fast paced changes, it’s hard to ignore the transformation our city is going through since it’s one of the things locals talk about. These conversations can be heard all over town, and the one thing that is always brought to the table is how we, as a society, are going to keep ourselves connected with each other without losing touch and without losing the unique things that make Raleigh the city we love.

Our parks and greenways are a great example of how important those community places are to socialize, meet our neighbors, and enjoy the flora and fauna North Carolina has to offer. Without these spaces, there would be nothing but stone, concrete, and asphalt around us, a picture no one would like to imagine.

Parks and recreational spaces are proven to have a positive impact on the people living within those surrounding neighborhoods. Besides the health benefits, and the peace of mind one may feel after a walk in the park, the social aspect of it is what makes them important to maintain a healthy society. Improving our parks provide identity for citizens and they play a role in the perception of the quality of life in a given community.

Social interaction and the impact on your health.

Humans are social creatures by nature, since the beginning of time we have belonged in family groups, communities, cities and so forth, it is embed in our DNA. By having a place to socialize and interact with others it lightens up our mood, makes us feel happier, and it promotes a sense of safety, belonging, and it builds trust bonds between the people interacting with each other. A few reasons why it is important to keep these spaces available to the public.

This past Wednesday September 28, 2022, leaders in the community and people living in Raleigh’s districts made themselves present in a community event hosted by the committee Vote Yes for the Raleigh Parks Bond, and initiative started by our representatives to help raise awareness and educate people on where those bonds are being spent and how they will be distributed.

Citizens are also encouraged to participate in these events, ask the questions they may feel are important, and to look into their districts and make sure they are getting a piece of that bond. The people select their leaders, and they have just as an important role in these decisions as their representatives, that is why it’s important to be present and make their voices and questions heard.

Chavis Park was used as an example of what the standard for other parks should be. Green areas made available to play, exercise, and wind down, accessibility for people with different physical abilities, lighted areas and cameras used to raise the sense of security for the people using these premises, these are some of the things on how the money from the bonds are being used. If you are ever curious as to why this should be the standard for our parks, take a few minutes from the day and visit this location.

In conclusion, we all deserve a healthier, and improved quality of life; our city is changing fast and catching up may take some time, but it is up to us to point out where these bonds will be distributed, the more we are present in these events, the better our representatives and leaders can make the right decisions that may impact us on the long run.
